he shrine is said to have been built in 795 by Tamuramaro Sakanoue, the first Seii Taishogun general. The tower gate, the worship hall, and the main hall are surrounded by mountains and have a solemn appearance. The shrine grounds and the roofs of the buildings are decorated with masaru monkey statues, the messenger of the gods, which are said to ward off evil and bring good luck. The shrine is also famous for its cedar trees, which are believed to bring fertility and safe births. The rhododendrons in May and the autumn leaves in November are spectacular, attracting many tourists.
