Isohara Coast & Futatsujima
Isohara Coast is characterized by a straight stretch of coastline overlooking the Pacific Ocean, and Futatsujima is shaped like an elephant. It is said that Ujo Noguchi, one of the three greatest poets in Japan, used to come up with ideas for his works while strolling along the Isohara Coast here. The seawater is a crystal clear blue, and in recent years it has been described by foreign tourists as the most beautiful sea in eastern Japan.
Futatsujima was reduced to two-thirds of its original size after the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami, and the other rock beside it is now hidden under the water. Despite this, it is still a popular symbol of Isohara. Futatsujima is illuminated at night.
