Jorenji Temple
Jorenji Temple is an ancient thatched-roof temple that sits quietly in the middle of a quiet forest, and was founded by Jikaku Daishi in 868. The 33 statues of Kannon (Goddess of Mercy) carved into the rocks in the Jorenji Valley on the temple grounds are said to be 1,000 years old. Based on the belief that the Kanzeon Bosatsu Goddess changes her form in thirty-three different ways to save people, the temple was built to allow people to worship many different forms of Kanzeon Bosatsu in one place and thus gain virtue. The temple has been destroyed by fire several times, and the current main hall was built in 1857.
